Description
Learn the Theory Behind Safe Blood Collection
This phlebotomy training course gives you a thorough grounding in the theory and best practice of blood collection — from venepuncture technique and equipment to infection control, patient care and sample handling.
It's ideal for healthcare assistants, support workers, and anyone looking to start a career in phlebotomy or strengthen their professional knowledge. By the end, you'll understand how to prepare for and approach venepuncture, select a vein, manage complications, handle samples, and put patient safety first throughout.
Please Read: Theory and Practical Competency
This is an important point we want to be upfront about. This online course gives you the theoretical knowledge of phlebotomy and a CPD certificate on completion. On its own, it does not make you a registered or fully competent phlebotomist, and it does not certify you as competent to draw blood from patients.
To gain genuine, hands-on phlebotomy competency, you can:
- Add our optional live bleeding experience, where you practise venepuncture under qualified supervision; and/or
- Practise under supervision in a clinical or workplace setting
Real Knowledge You Will Use With Every Patient
Every topic here builds your understanding of safe, professional blood collection.
- The fundamentals of phlebotomy — the role, duties, professional standards and guidelines
- Blood circulation, the composition of blood and blood vessels, and blood types
- Phlebotomy equipment — needles, vacuum tube systems and blood-collection tubes
- Routine venepuncture — tourniquet application, site selection, cleaning, equipment assembly and performing the draw
- Venepuncture complications and pre-examination variables
- Capillary blood collection and dermal puncture equipment
- Quality assessment, documentation and procedure management
- Special blood-collection procedures
- Infection control and risk management in a clinical environment
